Junctions and Crossroads is an international ideas competition which has been developed to generate a technical debate, involving professionals from different disciplines. Fifty-eight teams have worked on six metropolitan areas with the aim of reversing the major impacts that road infrastructures generate in their urban and environmental surroundings, creating real barriers and making connections with modes of transport that don't involve private vehicles impossible.

What are junctions?
By road junction we mean the intersection of segregated and heavily congested roads. Unlike crossroads, which are also intersections of roads, streets or highways, but of a more urban nature, junctions are specialised devices dedicated exclusively to ensuring the efficient movement of motor vehicles, which generate negative impacts, barriers between urban fabrics and fragmentations in the territorial system of open spaces.
The "Junctions and Crossroads, the future of road infrastructures" ideas competition was created with the aim of starting a technical and professional debate on what role these junctions, so common in the metropolis, should have and to try to gradually turn them into real metropolitan crossroads.
The result of the Junctions and Crossroads ideas competition was made public on 21 June. Of the 29 teams taking part in the final phase of the competition, a jury singled out six – one for each of the proposed areas – as having responded most successfully to the challenges posed.
The future Metropolitan Urban Master Plan will collate the ideas of all the participants in order to study the alternatives in each of the proposed areas. To share these ideas, an exhibition is planned for the beginning of 2022 and a publication as part of the Quaderns PDU metropolità. Collection.

WHAT IS THE CONTEXT OF THE COMPETITION?
Private car use is the most widespread mode of transport in metropolises. It occupies a large part of the public space in cities and fragments the territory and ecosystems, forming real barriers. How can we reverse this situation and reuse existing infrastructures to reconnect the territory, urban fabrics, people and nature, based on active mobility?

HOW WAS THE COMPETITION ORGANISED?
This competition, which started in January 2020, has been carried out in two phases: a first phase of strategic reflection on the territorial fit of infrastructures, with 58 participating teams, and a second phase of proposals relating to the road junctions, with 29 teams. All applicants had to form a multidisciplinary technical team led by an urban planner and composed of at least one architect, a civil engineer and an environmentalist.
